For Children and Youth

Nursery—Nursery care is provided for children as young as a few weeks old to 2 years of age.  Our dedicated member, Marcia Halsey, staffs the nursery each Sunday assisted by church members, to assure continuity and quality care.

Preschoolers (Ages 2-3-4)—Our 2-year-olds use the Toddlers and Twos series.  They are introduced to Bible stories through art, blocks, music, dramatic play, body movement, “science” experiments, and manipulation of shapes and textures, and age-appropriate worship.

Three- and four-year-olds follow the new curriculum, Rock Solid: Building a Heart of Faith.  In this class, children learn Bible stories through music, games, crafts, and take-away activites.  In addition, the children are offered  a variety of ways to experience God.

Elementary kids (K-5th grade)—Our four elementary classes meet in the Elementary Suite of the Education Building.  Children in K-1, 2-3, and 4th grade are using a new curriculum this fall, called Rock Solid: Building a Heart of Faith.   Through this Bible-based study, we are seeking to provide our kids a firm foundation of faith on which they can stand.  We not only teach our children about God, but we seek to inspire them to know God through Jesus Christ and to make the Bible a part of their everyday lives.

Fifth-graders are using the Live It curriculum, produced specifically for “tweens.”  This topical study encourages faith-based discussion of issues tweens face every day, while helping them build meaningful relationships with family, friends, and most importantly, Jesus Christ. We teach Christian practices such as prayer and Bible study to help them develop the skills they need to make faithful decisions in today’s world.

The Middle School class meets each week at 9:45am in the youth rooms on the 2nd Floor of the Family Life Center.  This fall the class will begin with an in depth study of the Gospels, focusing on the life of Jesus Christ.  We will continue with a topical study called Thinking Theologically, where will examine different Biblical responses poverty and hunger.  Each week we will learn more about who we are and who we are called to be.  The class is taught by Betsy and Jack Gustafson and Cindy and Greg McKenzie.

The High School Sunday School meets each week at 9:45am in the youth rooms on the 2nd Floor of the Family Life Center.  This fall the class will begin an in depth study of Exodus, discussing its history, context and application.  We will also discuss issues that teenagers face today and discover how the Bible informs our daily lives.  Each week we will learn more about who we are and who we are called to be.  The class is taught by Carol and Jim Bowen and Brad Clayton.

For Adults

Aitken has been in existence for nearly 50 years. We follow a lecture format, led by four teachers who rotate, using the Uniform Bible Study published for the PCUSA.  Many of our members are long-time members of Avondale.

Disciples is the most age-diverse group.  We discuss a wide range of topics from contemporary issues and Christian living to Bible and theology.  The Thoughtful Christian is our curriculum--a web-based resource of short-term studies.

Credo enjoys discussions that draw from current issues as well as book studies.  We include a time to share joys, difficulties, and support for one another.  Members range from age 40 up.

Foundations includes young adults in their 20s to 40s who want a meaningful class experience that nurtures their spiritual lives.  Study materials are chosen carefully from varied sources.  Discussion is led by members.

Sabbath House seeks to open the door to spiritual growth through study and discussion of conventional and non-conventional books, newspaper articles, etc.  We are open-minded, we welcome newcomers, and we enjoy sharing our faith.  We would like to share the journey of faith with you.

Bible 101 Class seeks to deepen our understanding of the Bible, enhance our ability to study the scriptures for ourselves, and enables us to be knowledgeable in talking with our children about the Bible.

Vanguard is mostly middle-aged folks, including singles and couples.  We have fun together and use the Uniform Bible Study of the PCUSA.  Class format combines lecture and discussion led by class members.
